The Beat

In order to understand rhythms we must first understand the beat. Rhythm moves to an underlying beat, which the musician must "feel". The beat is what we tap our feet to when we hear music that we like. The beat is what marchers march to in a parade; and it's the beat that dancers dance to.  The beat is steady, which is why the sound the heart makes is called a "heartbeat".  I can hear a beat when I put my wristwatch up to my ear; that beat is a steady 60 beats every minute. Can you think of any other things that keep a steady beat?
Listen to these beat examples:
Slow
(60 beats a minute)

Medium
(90 beats a minute)

Fast
(150 beats a minute)
