A Lesson in Harmony

Introduction: At the very beginning we have the notes which we are all familiar with.

     Major Scale

DO - RE - MI - FA - SO - LA - TI - DO

When the notes of  the scale start and end on DO, we have a Major scale. The resting tone, or home tone, is DO. Most of the music we listen to is based in the Major scale. Songs based on the Major scale do not sound "finished" unless we hear DO at the end. But there are other scales. In fact, we can start the scale on any of the notes. When the scale starts and ends on LA, it is called a Minor scale. The home tone of the Minor scale is, you guessed it, LA. Tunes which are based in the Minor scale won't sound finished unless we hear LA at the end.

   Minor Scale

Briefly the rest of the scales look like this:

Lydian Scale

FA - SO - LA - TI - DO - RE - MI - FA

Phyrgian Scale

MI - FA - SO - LA - TI - DO - RE - MI

Dorian Scale

Locrian Scale
